Bristol Airport has been criticised over a new service allowing passengers it launched last month to avoid security queues by paying £5, the Evening Post reports. The service has not gone down well with a regular traveller, who claims it is an unfair money-making enterprise which exploits the misery of passengers who have to endure delays at security.
The Fly Thru service, which was introduced late last month, allows passengers to fast-track their way to the departure lounge in return for a £5 fee. It is aimed at business passengers, people under time pressure or those who can afford to pay not to queue as part of a customer upgrade across the airport.
But regular traveller Graeme Wakerley, a biomedical scientist from Kingswood, told the newspaper: ‘I use Bristol Airport frequently, and I think the facilities are poor. It galls me when they send me an email offering an improved service – which I have to pay for. It gives the impression that anyone who pays their £5 can get preferential treatment, while everyone else has to make do with the queues.'
‘I think it is appalling that Bristol Airport should try to generate cash through the misery that they put people through. Why don't they just put the money into staff and, for example, more toilets?’
James Gore, spokesman for Bristol Airport, told the newspaper: ‘We have invested over £3m in improving the security search area, including additional channels and state-of-the-art x-ray technology. This has enabled us to reduce queuing times for all passengers.'
‘However, some passengers want a way of guaranteeing the quickest possible progress through the security point, so we have introduced the Fly Thru option. By offering a choice, we provide an airport experience to suit the needs of all passengers.‘
