Tram-trains could run from the main Edinburgh to Fife train line to Edinburgh Airport under proposals being championed by transport chiefs, the Scotsman reports. A spur from the busy line would see the hybrid vehicles link to the airport before connecting with the tram line 1A, which is currently under construction.
If adopted, the scheme would build a wider tram network as well as relieving congestion at Edinburgh's two main railway stations, Waverley and Haymarket. The city Council is already conducting a study into running the hybrid trams from Newcraighall to Haymarket.
Tram-trains, common in Germany and Holland, are to be used in the UK for the first time in 2010, when they will replace standard trains on the Penistone Line between Huddersfield, Barnsley and Sheffield for a two-year trial. They can carry more passengers than conventional trains, but there have been safety concerns raised about them sharing the same tracks.
