Servisair announce Gatwick job cuts

02.08.08

Ground services company Servisair has announced plans to axe 162 workers at Gatwick this winter. The company said that that 'seasonal factors' coupled with the new EU - US Open Skies agreement, which has seen a number of airlines shift flights from Gatwick to Heathrow, mean staff levels must be 'reduced accordingly'.

It is reported that management and clerical positions (which could include check-in staff) together with 61 manual workers face losing their jobs at the end of October, when airlines launch their winter schedules. Many of the staff are yet to be informed of their fate, although the union Unite has been notified.

A spokesman for Servisair said: ‘Our staffing levels are adjusted to match seasonal peaks and changing operational patterns. At Gatwick we make these adjustments each October after the peak holiday season. This year's high number of redundancies are due to some contract changes and airline volume reductions this winter.’

Phil Silkstone, Unite Regional Officer, said: ‘There is a statutory 90 day consultation period on the job losses. We will be negotiating to try to substantially reduce the number of redundancies.’
