Two planes were involved in a ‘minor wingtip collision’ today at Manchester Airport. The planes touched wings while they were taxiing to the runway from Terminal 1.
A spokesman for the airport said no-one on board the two aircraft was hurt in the collision. The airport remained fully operational and there were no delays.
One of the planes was a Futura Boeing 737-800 bound for Tenerife, carrying 180 passengers. The other was a Lufthansa Airbus A320 carrying 108 passengers to Frankfurt. The planes were due to take off 5 minutes apart at 13:15 and 13:20 respectively.
An airport spokesman said although passengers probably felt a bump there was no ‘serious structural damage’ to either aircraft. He said that everyone stayed on board while the fire service checked the planes, and then departed down the steps in the normal manner.
Both aircraft were later examined by experts to assess the damage. An investigation into the incident will be carried out by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.
