The crisis over marking SATS tests has generated a £100,000 bonus for the Hilton Hotel Manchester Airport. ETS Europe, the US company marking the papers, has ‘virtually taken over’ the hotel, the Mail reports.
The paper says scores of staff are based at the hotel working long hours to catch up with the backlog of papers. It is renting 6 conference rooms for £350 per day plus guest rooms at £117 per day and its markers have been staying at the airport hotel for the last 4 weeks. A 'hotel source' told the newspaper ETS has already run up a bill of over £100,000.
ETS has admitted a catalogue of failings on the £165m contract to mark 1.2m test papers for 11 and 14-year-olds. The results were supposed to be issued on July 8 but many will not be issued until September, and there are reports that ETS will lose the contract.
