Two men caused a security alert at Manchester Airport yesterday, after gaining access to a terminal rooftop as a Sultan of the United Arab Emirates landed, the Manchester Evening News reports. The pair, both from Wythenshawe, were arrested by armed police.
Police officers spotted the men on one of the roofs of Terminal One shortly before 08:30. They were watched via CCTV cameras as they made their way across the rooftops to Terminal Three, where Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, a member of the UAE royal family, was about to disembark a BA flight.
Sultan bin Tahnoun, a member of the Abu Dhabi executive council and chairman of its tourism authority, waited on board the plane while the men were removed from the rooftop.
Inspector Richard Clarke told the newspaper: ‘They realised they were where they shouldn't be and then spotted the armed police positioned to escort the Sultan. They thought they were coming for them and turned back.'
‘They were arrested by four officers within about 5 minutes. We then did a sweep of the roofs to check they hadn't left anything. It was a breach of security, but they didn't go on to the apron.’
The men gained access by jumping over one of the walls on the airport's multi-storey car park. They were arrested under the Aviation Security Act for an unauthorised breach of a restricted zone. Inspector Clarke said: ‘We're not sure why they were there yet, but they're both local lads.'
